The word "Girl" has caught a lot of flack here lately. Some women find it derogatory, belittling, and juvenile. And we get that. To be honest, Girl Med Media was launched from the #GirlMedTwitter hashtag, a place where we talked about traditionally "girly" things and how they fit into our medical lives. Dry shampoo, lipstick, dating, shoes, the best fitting scrubs... No girly topic was off-limits. These were things that we couldn't ask our male mentors about, and things that oftentimes are considered trivial by the big "academic" medicine world in which many of work or study in.
But we're taking the word back. Girls are imaginative, creative, bold, fearless, strong, brave, hard-working, intelligent, and so much more. We don't think there's anything wrong with being a girl. According to Beyonce, we run the world! Any kind of girl you want to be, we're here for you. Dressed in pink from head to toe? Never worn makeup in your life? Are you a male who just wants to support the women you know in medicine? More power to you. You are welcome here. We're glad to have you.
